Pleiku – The watery eyes of the highlands
Pleiku is a city in central Vietnam, located in the Central Highlands region. It is the capital of the Gia Lai Province. Many years ago, it was inhabited primarily by the Bahnar and Jarai ethnic groups, sometimes known as the Montagnards or Degar, although now it is inhabited primarily by the Kinh ethnic group.
Pleiku is well-known amongst international travelers for once being the site of an American Air Force Base. Destroyed during the Vietnam War, the city was rebuilt in the years after the conflict, and the little culture that remains is fiercely protected by the Vietnamese government.

When you should come to Pleiku
Pleiku’s weather stays relatively mild year round. While the city does experience a wet and dry season, temperatures tend to stay pleasant compared to much of this part of the world. Average temperatures don’t generally fall below 25 degrees Celsius, and the hottest it gets is typically around 30 degrees Celsius. If you don’t mind a bit of heat, the dry summer months make it convenient to tour the surrounding outdoor wonders. However, if the rain doesn’t bother you, the area becomes beautiful and lush during the wet season. Since there are usually no drastic changes, the time of year you visit should depend on your own weather preference.

Main Attractions
While Pleiku was damaged by the war, the area has since become a tourist destination. Visitors will find various activities in the city and on its outskirts including cultural experiences, beautiful temples, and mountain landscapes. Pleiku’s main attractions are Sea Lake, Minh Thanh Pagoda, Ham Rong Peak, Kon Ka Kinh National Park, ethnic villages, and Kon Tum City.

What to eat in Pleiku ?
While Pleiku doesn’t draw much attention to itself in terms of city appeal, the food might make you forget all about that – at least temporarily.
Pleiku cuisine is quite archetypical of the wilderness of the Central Highlands. Pleiku is a food haven, full of unique treats such as the dried phở, coal grilled chicken pipe rice, grilled pork spring rolls, crab sauce rice vermicelli, briefly suntanned beef or grilled beef pipes.

If you’re in the area and craving something new, try Dried phở, colloquially called the double-bowl phở, is served in two bowls: one for phở strands and another for the broth. Guests may opt for either the chicken or beef phở and enjoy it with lettuce, parsleys and bean sprouts. The elaborate sweet broth, chewy phở strands and distinct service collectively contribute to the reputable treat of Pleiku.

Another treat not to miss in Pleiku is coal grilled chicken rice. Steamed rice is then grilled in pipes to yield chewy and sweet grains, with a stint of ashy flavors of burnt hop, then served with grilled chicken. The honey dipped chicken tastes fleshy, sweet and vibrantly marinated.
